London, United Kingdom, 4 August 2026 – Apple has launched a fresh legal challenge against a United Kingdom demand for access to encrypted customer data, reopening a dispute with implications for cybersecurity, cloud services and cross-border government powers.
The complaint was filed with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal over a requirement that Apple enable access to encrypted cloud backups belonging to British users. It follows an earlier confrontation in which the government stepped back from a broader demand affecting users in the United Kingdom and United States after diplomatic and privacy concerns.
