Tokyo, Japan, 4 August 2026 – Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s expansionary fiscal agenda could support Japan’s near-term growth, but it is also increasing scrutiny of the government’s interest bill as bond yields rise and public debt remains among the highest in the developed world.
Takaichi has argued that Japan should not hesitate to fund strategic investment in advanced technology, energy, defence and supply chains. Her government is also considering a temporary reduction in the consumption tax on food to ease household pressure. Such measures can lift demand and improve business confidence, especially when real wages are struggling to keep pace with prices.
