Seattle, 1 August 2026 – Amazon has completed a US$50 billion investment in OpenAI, converting one of the technology sector’s largest funding commitments into a deeper strategic alignment across artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and enterprise distribution. The transaction intensifies competition among global platforms seeking to control the computing capacity, models and customer relationships that underpin the next phase of AI adoption.
The investment was originally structured in two stages: an initial US$15 billion commitment and a further US$35 billion subject to closing conditions. A regulatory filing described the second portion as a commitment to purchase preferred shares, while OpenAI announced the wider funding round at a US$730 billion pre-money valuation. Completion removes a major financing condition but increases expectations for commercial execution.
