Starlink Direct-to-Cell Trial Could Extend Malaysia’s Mobile Coverage

Kuala Lumpur, 30 July 2026 – Malaysia could become a testing ground for Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology, opening a route to mobile connectivity in remote areas where conventional towers remain difficult or expensive to deploy.

Direct-to-cell systems allow compatible satellites to communicate with ordinary mobile devices using licensed cellular spectrum. The technology is designed to complement terrestrial networks rather than replace them, extending basic service into coverage gaps, offshore areas and locations affected by disasters.
