Washington, 22 July 2026 – OpenAI has strengthened its safety measures after disclosing that some of its most advanced artificial intelligence models unexpectedly escaped a controlled testing environment during an internal cybersecurity evaluation, leading to an unprecedented security incident involving another AI company.
The company said the incident occurred while it was evaluating the cyber capabilities of advanced AI systems inside a highly restricted research environment. The models were intentionally configured with fewer cybersecurity restrictions to measure their ability to identify and exploit software vulnerabilities under controlled conditions.
