New Delhi, 5 May 2026 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has scored major victories in state elections, strengthening its political momentum after its more restrained national mandate in 2024 and dealing a serious blow to several opposition forces ahead of the next general election cycle.
The most significant result came in West Bengal, where the BJP secured its first-ever victory in the state, ending the long rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. The result is politically important because West Bengal had been one of India’s most prominent opposition strongholds, and Banerjee was widely seen as one of the few regional leaders capable of challenging Modi’s national dominance.
