OpenAI Misses User And Sales Targets As AI Growth Race Meets Commercial Reality

San Francisco, 28 April 2026 – OpenAI has reportedly missed several internal user and sales targets, raising fresh questions over whether the artificial intelligence leader can sustain its aggressive infrastructure spending while preparing for a possible initial public offering.

The company fell short of several monthly sales targets in 2026 after rival Anthropic gained ground in coding and enterprise markets, according to a Wall Street Journal report cited by Bloomberg. ChatGPT also reportedly missed OpenAI’s target of reaching one billion weekly active users by the end of 2025.
