Alibaba Plans Major Revamp to Boost AI Profit Focus

Hangzhou, 16 March 2026 โ€“ Chinese technology giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is preparing a major corporate overhaul designed to sharpen its focus on artificial intelligence and turn its rapidly expanding AI capabilities into a more profitable business engine.

The restructuring will consolidate several of Alibabaโ€™s scattered AI initiatives into a single organisation, enabling the company to better coordinate research, product development and commercial deployment across its ecosystem.

New AI Business Unit

Under the plan, Alibaba has created a new AI-focused business group led directly by Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu. The unit will integrate several internal teams and projects, including the Qwen large language model, Tongyi research laboratory, the MaaS (Model-as-a-Service) business line and other AI innovation programs.

By placing these efforts under a single structure, Alibaba aims to accelerate the development of enterprise AI products and embed AI technologies across its core platforms such as Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba Cloud.

Executives believe tighter integration will improve operational efficiency and help translate AI breakthroughs into commercial services for businesses and developers.
