Malaysia Reaches New Heights: First-Time Public Access to Merdeka 118’s Summit

Last updated on December 25, 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: In a historic first, the pinnacle of Merdeka 118—magnificent and rarely seen by the public—will be accessible in the upcoming Sky Race event. Participants will ascend all 2,845 steps to Level 118 and be treated to sweeping views of Malaysia’s capital.

Breaking the Records

Merdeka 118 stands at 678.9 metres with 118 floors, making it the tallest building in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and the second-tallest in the world after the Burj Khalifa. The Sky Race requires stair-climbing of 2,845 steps, taking participants to Level 118, before they descend via elevator.

The challenge will take place on 30 August 2025, marking the first-ever public access to the building’s summit. Organizers expect around 5,000 climbers from over 30 countries to take part.

Race Highlights

  • Exclusive Summit Experience: Participants will get a rare opportunity to ascend a floor never before open to the public—and only for this one-day event.
  • Inclusive Format: With no cut-off time, climbers can proceed at their own pace, pausing for photos or savoring the views before descending via lift.
  • Star Ambassador: Malaysian tower-running legend Soh Wai Ching, a world champion and multiple record-holder in stair races, serves as the event’s ambassador.
  • Registration & Fees: Entry costs RM159 per person or RM449 for teams of three. Race packs will be collected on 29 August 2025 at Stadium Merdeka.

Symbolism & Significance

The Sky Race is more than a sporting challenge, it’s a symbolic ascent timed with Malaysia’s Independence celebrations. Climbing Merdeka 118 during Merdeka Day weekend reflects both the nation’s progress and its soaring aspirations, giving participants a chance to quite literally rise above the city.
