Lyon end veteran Matic’s contract a year ahead of schedule

LYON: Nemanja Matic, the former Serbian international, has mutually agreed with Lyon to terminate his contract a year early, the Ligue 1 side announced on Thursday.

The 37-year-old ex-Manchester United, Chelsea, and Benfica midfielder was originally contracted until June 30, 2026. However, the club decided to part ways with one of its highest earners as part of a major cost-cutting drive.

Matic joined Lyon in January 2024 from Ligue 1 rivals Rennes, playing a pivotal role in the team’s revival from bottom of the table at the winter break to a sixth-place finish, securing Europa League qualification, and reaching the French Cup final, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain.

During his time at Lyon, Matic made 58 appearances. Internationally, he represented Serbia 48 times between 2008 and 2020. Lyon kick off their new campaign away to Lens on Saturday.
