Japan’s Miyū Yamashita Takes Maybank Championship After Play-off, Gains Second LPGA Title This Year

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 November 2025 — Japan’s rising star Miyū Yamashita delivered a dramatic finish at the Maybank Championship, clinching her second win on the LPGA Tour this year after emerging victorious in a play-off to take the title.

Yamashita entered the final round at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club trailing the leaders, but carded a stellar seven-under-par 65 to force a tie with fellow contenders including Hannah Green and Hye‑Jin Choi. The three-way play-off was settled in Yamashita’s favour as she made birdie on the first extra hole.

The win marks Yamashita’s second LPGA title of the year, following her major triumph earlier at the AIG Women’s Open. It is a significant milestone not just for her career but also for Japan’s presence on the global women’s golf stage.

Yamashita’s victory reinforces her reputation for composure under pressure. After entering the final day several strokes behind the leaders, she rallied with birdies and a clean-back nine stretch, signalling that her form is peaking just as the season winds down.

For Asia and the region’s golf fans, this achievement highlights two broader themes: the accelerating rise of Japanese (and more generally Asian) talent in global women’s golf, and the growing stature of events such as the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur as platforms where major stars decide titles.

Yamashita reflected on her win by saying that she remained focused on each shot, let go of the scoreboard and trusted her game. The Korean and Australian challengers pushed hard, but Yamashita’s late-round surge proved decisive.

As the LPGA moves into its season-closing events, Yamashita’s win in Kuala Lumpur gives her momentum and places her firmly among the contenders to watch. Her success also serves as an inspiration for younger golfers across Asia who see a path to world-class performance on the global stage.
