Japan Inflation Eases as Takaichi Weighs More Cost-Relief Measures

Tokyo, 22 May 2026 – Japan’s inflation eased in April, offering some relief to households and policymakers, even as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi weighs additional cost-relief measures to cushion consumers from higher energy and living costs.

Japan’s headline inflation slowed to 1.4% year-on-year in April, down from 1.5% in March, according to latest inflation data. Food inflation remained elevated at 3.5%, while goods inflation stood at 1.7% and services inflation eased to 0.9%.
