[In Pictures] Oscars: The World’s Most Iconic Film Awards and Their Enduring Cultural Impact

Editor’s Pick | The Ledger Asia

Los Angeles, 24 January 2026 – Every year, the film world, and audiences worldwide, pause to witness the spectacle of the Academy Awards, affectionately known as the Oscars, a night where cinema’s finest are honoured, and unforgettable red-carpet moments are etched into cultural memory. These awards are more than a celebration of film; they represent a global festival of artistry, achievement and storytelling that transcends borders and language.

The Academy Awards trace their origins back to 1929, when the first ceremony was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Today, the Oscars are handed out annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognise excellence in cinematic achievements, from acting and directing to sound, visual effects and original screenwriting. The statuette itself, a golden figure known officially as the Academy Award of Merit, has become the ultimate symbol of success in film.

The Oscars: Global Film’s Pinnacle

Though rooted in Hollywood, the Oscars have long evolved into a global cultural event. Films from around the world, from Sweden to South Korea to Argentina, compete on the same stage, showcasing the diversity of storytelling and cinema craft. Viewers from Africa to Asia to Europe tune in not only to see who wins, but to witness how film reflects and shapes contemporary thought, society, and even politics.

The red carpet itself has become as much a part of the show as the awards. Designers compete for attention, and celebrities use the platform to spotlight fashion, social issues, and global causes. From classic elegance to daring avant-garde statements, Oscar night fashion often sets trends and sparks heated global discussion, a testament to the ceremony’s influence beyond cinema.

Moments That Make Cinema History

Some Oscar ceremonies become cultural touchstones. At the 97th Academy Awards in March 2025, films like Anora made waves with multiple wins and historic nominations, demonstrating how international films and talents are increasingly integral to the Oscars’ identity.

But the Oscars’ impact isn’t confined to the winners. Acceptance speeches, surprising outcomes, and standout performances have ripple effects: boosting box office numbers, reinvigorating careers, and shifting industry trends. They also offer a platform for advocacy, with winners and presenters alike drawing attention to social justice, climate change and global humanitarian issues from the podium.

Why the Awards Still Matter

Critics sometimes debate whether the Oscars fully reflect global cinema’s diversity or if they capture younger audiences who consume content differently. Yet the ceremony’s prestige remains undiminished. An Oscar can transform a filmmaker’s influence, propel independent cinema to mainstream awareness, and elevate new voices from regions previously underrepresented on the world stage.

The enduring fascination with the Oscars also lies in the stories behind the statuette, whose nickname “Oscar” has become synonymous with excellence in film. Though there’s no single origin story, one popular anecdote credits a Hollywood librarian’s affectionate comparison of the statuette to her Uncle Oscar, a quirky origin that nevertheless became part of cinema folklore.

A Night That Unites the World

What began as an intimate dinner nearly a century ago has become a global celebration of cinematic imagination. Millions across continents watch the live broadcast, engage in predictions and debates, and celebrate the art of film.

As cinema continues to evolve, with streaming, international collaborations and diverse creative voices, the Oscars remain a mirror of the world’s cultural heartbeat, honouring not just technical excellence but the power of storytelling to connect humanity.

For filmmakers and audiences alike, Oscar night is a reminder that film is a universal language, uniting people through emotion, spectacle and shared experience.

Kendall Jenner

This has been an extraordinary year for Kendall Jenner. Her stardom has taken a huge rise, as she became one of the world’s top models alongside her best buds Gigi and Bella Hadid. Her 2017 red carpet dress leaves little to the imagination. It shows off her naturally thin and fit figure, and hugs her curves in all the right places. We love it!

Miranda Kerr

The Victoria’s Secret Model always looks amazing and she looks as sexy as ever in this red dress. She proudly displays quite a bit of skin with this look, and we think there might be more skin on display than material. She leaves little to the imagination and it totally works.

Swank won an award and on the red carpet in 2000. She won the Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and she lit up the room in this beautiful, elegant blue dress.

Irina’s dress was the topic of the night for many people. It is certainly revealing. We think she looks gorgeous!

Gigi Hadid

The super famous, top model and her sister have always turned heads. This decision is no exception. We wish we had their genes and bone structure! No matter which event she attends, Gigi looks stunning.

Charlize Theron

We also think this is one of her finest red carpet moments. Do you agree? While some like to criticize the South African beauty’s skin and hair, we think it complements the dress perfectly.

Rihanna

Our favorite bad girl, Ri Ri is well known for taking fashion risks. We usually are big fans of her style, but we aren’t quite sure she pulls this one off. Some fashion experts have commented she looks like an unflattering Valentine’s Day bouquet.

Angelina Jolie

Usually, such a pale-colored dress wouldn’t complement such a pale complexion. In this case, however, it totally works!

This dress definitely complements her figure and she looks absolutely beautiful. While her face might look less than impressed, we think she nailed it.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry certainly started some controversy over this interesting outfit decision.

Whether you love this look or hate it, we think Katy Perry achieved her goal of making a huge impact on the red carpet and challenging our expectations of how a woman should dress for this event.

The 2018 look of Andra Day certainly caught eyes with its array of materials and colors. The Grammy-nominated singer, Andra Day, turned heads both with this dress and by lying down on the red carpet!

She added more drama with her hairstyle decision. The voluminous ponytail full with loose waves was gorgeously decorated with small pink flowers. We certainly think this is a totally original, girly look.

Cardi B showed up with a vintage Thierry Mugler look straight from 1995. The dress featured dramatic ruffles with pearl details at the waist and neck.

The entire ensemble was made to resemble a pearl inside a clam but in a fashionable way. Cardi paired the dress with a  matching pearl updo. In fact, this was the same piece that was worn on the runway.

Penelope Cruz

Penelope looks so beautiful! We love the dress, her simple hair, and simple jewelry.

Taylor Swift

At this year’s AMAs, Taylor Swift went for gold for her onstage outfit. The singer was honored with the Artist of the Decade award and performed a medley of her greatest hits on stage.

Lady Gaga always is always pushing the boundaries and is an amazing fashion trend setter.

This outfit certainly fits the bill. Lady Gaga’s style has certainly evolved and this jump suit exudes class and timeless style.
