KUALA LUMPUR, 26 October 2025 — ASEAN looks forward to a new chapter of cooperation with Japan under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, whose historic election as Japan’s first female premier is expected to bring fresh momentum to regional collaboration in innovation, clean energy, and resilient growth, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the 28th ASEAN–Japan Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar expressed confidence that Takaichi’s leadership would inject new dynamism into one of ASEAN’s most enduring partnerships.
“I am honoured to welcome Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to her first ASEAN–Japan Summit. We extend our warmest congratulations on your assumption of office,” Anwar said.
“ASEAN looks forward to working closely with you to advance our shared vision of innovation, clean energy and resilient growth.”
Anwar added that the potential of ASEAN–Japan cooperation “is immense — anchored in trust, driven by shared values, and strengthened by decades of partnership.”
A Renewed Partnership for the Region
The 28th ASEAN–Japan Summit marks Takaichi’s maiden visit to Kuala Lumpur since assuming office on Tuesday, making her the first woman to hold Japan’s premiership.
During her visit, Takaichi is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Malaysian leaders to explore new avenues for collaboration in:
- Maritime security and regional stability
- Economic resilience and investment partnerships
- Green transition initiatives and clean energy innovation
- Humanitarian affairs within the ASEAN framework
Anwar also highlighted that ASEAN’s partnership with Japan continues to evolve in response to shared regional challenges and global shifts, adding that “a renewed and forward-looking direction” is essential for both sides to thrive in the coming decade.
Historical Context
Japan remains one of ASEAN’s most important strategic partners, with deep cooperation across trade, infrastructure, and digital transformation. The ASEAN–Japan relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023, underscoring Japan’s growing role in supporting Southeast Asia’s sustainable development and regional integration.
Takaichi’s government is expected to continue Japan’s support for ASEAN’s digital economy goals and clean energy transition, particularly through initiatives linked to green technology, maritime connectivity, and supply chain resilience.
