SEOUL, 29 October 2025 – Amazon is earmarking more than US$5 billion for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in South Korea. The investment will fund the development of AI data centres in the regions of Incheon and Gyeonggi over the next few years up to 2031.

This is the largest direct foreign investment made to South Korea, surpassing the last investment record of US$4 billion set by Amazon to build a data centre in Ulsan.

The announcement was made at the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, where Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services met with South Korea President Lee Jae Myung.

South Korea aims to be among the top three global AI powerhouses. This additional investment will facilitate the country’s efforts to accelerate its AI ecosystem.

Amazon is expanding its footprint in Asia as competition intensifies among global cloud providers to dominate AI infrastructure through large-scale data centre investments.

South Korea, as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing with the likes of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, provides a strategic base for AI-powered advanced computing and data storage services.
